Neil Gillman on Heschel
Rabbi Neil Gillman, former Professor at Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS), gives a 2008 talk at Temple Emanu-el in NYC. In it, Gillman shares his personal reflections on the life and work of Abraham Joshua Heschel. Gillman gives an intimate and personal picture of his experience with Heschel while being his student at JTS in the 1950s, as well as a general overview of the ideas he transmitted to the rabbis-in-training at JTS. Gillman relates his sense of the central ideas in Heschel's book "The Prophets," with additional insights as to how the relationship between Heschel and Mordecai Kaplan affected the standpoint and feelings of students at JTS.
